MAME Conference Day One
I started my day with a fun and informative presentation from Gary Hartzell about collaborative. What a joy it was to hear him speak and what valuable tools he shared. I also attended sessions about using puppets in the library, integrating library lessons with classroom curriculum and using web 2.0 tools. It has been wonderful hearing advice from practicing media specialists. I also attended the University of Michigan alumni luncheon where I enjoyed a delicious lunch, the company of fellow wolverines, and a beautiful view of Traverse City. I'm looking forward to attending the Gala this evening and then its home for me! It's been a great experience and I hope to attend many more MAME conferences.

Hi Cheryl-
Can you take us a little further into your journey and help us understand how you feel your view of your practice has changed? When you're in the field, will you do anything differently as a result of the information you gained at MAME? Maybe it's too early to tell. What do you think?
I was only able to attend for a day so I knew I would only be able to get a small taste of what was out there. I have to say that I did attend the elementary shop talk and did walk away with some concerns about the profession, especially about the future of the profession. There was a lot of talk about the profession being on "shaky" grounds and that we should be thankful that there are still jobs there because many districts are eliminating media specialists. There was also a lot of discussion about time management and I did learn some tips (i.e. putting tubs in the classroom and having a parent volunteer collect the books and bring them down, putting up a list in the teacher lunch room titled curriculum and providing teachers with sticky notes so the teachers could say what they were studying). I was encouraged because I found that a lot of what was being discussed at the conference is what we are talking about in my university classes so I felt good that my training is getting me ready for the profession. I feel the best experience I had was the keynote speaker. I learned a lot of great tips from Gary Hartzell about collaboration including the importance of being "likable" so the teachers will want to work with you and making sure you pick positive, creative teachers to work with. Overall, it was a good experience but I did come home with more concerns about the future of the profession. My professors at U of M have emphasized the importance of collaboration in our profession and this was really reinforced during this conference.
