What is Treasure Mountain?

This year marks the twentieth year of the Treasure Mountain Research Retreat. This venerable institution of school library media research has been moving around the country giving researchers and research lovers a forum in which to exchange ideas and share findings.

In 2003, I was a Treasure Mountain Doctoral Fellow. That year, we had the event in rural Missouri at an old resort that looked like something out the The Road to Wellville combined with The Shining. The walls of the huge place were dark paneled wood and displayed pictures people hooked up to various health-inducing medical apparatus.

It was a wild, mind-blowing experience. I worked along side Ross Todd, Delia Neuman, Kathy Latrobe, David Loerstcher, Danny Callison, Denise Agosto, Jennifer Branch...the list goes on. I was in the first year of my doctoral work at that point and left the event inspired to become a professor. I'm now in my third year and loving every minute of it.

This year, I am co-leading Treasure Mountain with David Loertscher. The attendees include an equally esteemed list of researchers and about 70 other participants! David and I have planned two jam-packed days of research discussions and visioning for the future. I will be reporting on our progress in this blog and welcome your comments.

Also, I have invited three up-and-coming media specialists from Wayne and University of Michigan to share their journeys through the Michigan Association of Media in Education (MAME) conference that is concurrent to Treasure Mountain. I'm so excited to have them reflect on their time at Michigan's premier professional event for school library media specialists.

All I had to see were the names Loerstcher and Todd, two of my favorite library research folks, to be envious of Marcia's first Treasure Mountain experience! One of the best MAME conferences ever was the one where I was introduced to the research, and humor, of Ross Todd. He's definitely worth the price of admission to any conference at which he is presenting.

This is Shelley, one of the "up-and-coming media specialists" from WSU that will offer my take on the MAME conference in Traverse City this month. I have been a K-5 media specialist at Pine Lake Elementary in Bloomfield Hills, MI almost ten years now and was a classroom teacher before that. (I wonder if all those years still allow me to called "up-and-coming...")

MAME is always a great get-away-and-recharge conference and I am looking forward to doing just that in a couple weeks. I'm attending a pre-conference session on blogs and wikis (imagine that!) as well as one on copyright for librarians. I'm also looking forward to checking in on the blog and seeing what other attendees on both sides of the country have to say about their respective professional development experiences.

Until then...dream of smooth travel plans, good books, great collegial conversation and rejuvenation!

I'm Carma and another of the "up-and-coming media specialists" from Wayne State. I am currently in my first year as a K-12 Media Specialist for Clinton Community Schools in Clinton, MI. A new district for me and I am loving my new position. Before this, I was in the classroom teaching English. I really don't miss grading those papers!

This MAME conference is my first and I am so excited to be going. I know that I will learn so many new things, plus I get to reunite with my friend Shelley as well as other WSU friends.

I will do my best to fill everyone in on my experiences at MAME.

Travel safe and see you there.

Hi everyone,

I'm Cheryl and I'm definitely an "up-and-coming" media specialist as I will be new to this profession. I'm currently in my second year at Michigan's School of Information and will be attending my first MAME conference. I've returned to school after many years away and am adjusting to but also enjoying being back. I'm a mom to three wonderful kids and discovered, while working as a substitute teacher in the media center, what I wanted to do professionally for the rest of my career so I decided to go back to school!

I'm really excited to go to MAME and meet everybody and am happy to share my experiences.

I've arrived at MAME and am excited for tomorrow. Tonight I went to the Exhibits and everyone was very encouraging to me when I told them that I was a student (they all wondered why I didn't have a school district listed under my name on my nametag). I'll reflect tomorrow on the presentations I attend.
